Is PCD a requirement for upgrading to 10?  Or is it optional and just highly suggested?

HI Anthony,

Its not a mandatory requirement. The legacy was of upgrade is still available & supported. PCD only simplfies & automates the task. The software is shipped along with the purchase CUCM 10.x with no extra cost. Having said that, its upto the customer & administrator to upgrade using the method that is more suitable to thier environment.

Hi Raees

PCD looks like a great tool. My issue is the ITL files deletion during the 8.x to 10.x upgrade. Even I had a nightmare on this issue at a customer site, where we went to each phone and deleted the file. My question is the ITL file issue will not hinder us while using PCD. Hope we don't have to delete the itl files from the phones after the migration.

Hi Ratheesh

You won't run into ITL file issue while performing upgrade/migrate task using PCD as it performs a backup of the Private & Public keys from the existing cluster & restores them in the new CUCM 10.x cluster. Therefore, the new ITL file is signed using the same keys & the phones would accept it seamlessly.

Hi Raees,

We have a CUCM 9.1.2 envirioment with 1 Pub and 1 Sub. Both are appliance model and are running in mixed mode. Most phones are using secure profile. We plan to migrate from appliance model to Vm on UCS using PCD tool.

Q: What about migrating CTL in this case? does PCD take care of everything? What is the proper procedure?

Q: Does PCD take care of ELM migration which is in our case co-resistent on Publisher node?

Thank you for info,

Hi Ales

Q: What about migrating CTL in this case? does PCD take care of everything? What is the proper procedure?
[Raees] Although PCD does take a backup of the CTL file & the private/public keys for different roots ex. CAPF, its highly recommended that you re-run the CTL Client after migration.

Q: Does PCD take care of ELM migration which is in our case co-resistent on Publisher node?
[Raees] In UC ver 10.x & above, ELM has been changed to PLM (Prime License Manager) & you would need ver 10.x licenses to work with UC ver 10.x. You will have to install & migrate ver 9.x licenses to ver 10.x using PLM.

Hi Raees,

I'm having Call Manager 7.1.5.31900-3 running on MCS servers , with  Pub and Sub.

My concern is, when  I start the Migration process of Publisher, does it shutdown Sub on MCS?, because I need to make sure that system won't goes down during Migration.

Hi Niyadh,

It depends on whether you are going for a simple migration (same network settings) or network migration.

In simple migration, PCD will shut down sub on MCS, only after it has completed installation of Sub on VM. Sub will continue to run on MCS until, Pub is being is being installed and data is being imported to it.

Sami

Hi Sami,

Thanks for the email. I'm going for Simple Migration, so I believe there won't be any downtime required for the migration.

Also I heard from one of the Engineer that Migration from 7.1.5 to 11x is not compatible. But the PCD guide is showing that it is supported. Which one is correct?

Thanks

Niyadh

Hi Niyadh,

Please note that, you must disable EM services on 7.1 cluster before initiating migration. This will result in phones logging out profiles already logged in, when you are in the middle of migration you will notice that, some of the phones migrated to new cluster, whereas some of the phones still registered to cluster. In this situation, if users may not be able to make calls (depending on the configuration on hard phones).

According to PCD migration guide, yes migration is supported from 6.1(5) until 9.1.

Hi, I have a requirement to upgrade from 6.1.2 to 10. Is the best way to do an upgrade to 6.1.5 then pcd to 10 as it seems that the earliest pcd support is 6.1.5 or a "jump" upgrade to 9 then pcd to 10?

Thanks

  • Cisco Employee,

Hi Paul

As you would be performing an upgrade from CUCM ver 6.1.3, I understand you are currently running on MCS servers. I would therefore suggest you to move using PCD for the following advantages

1. PCD greatly simplifies migration to virtualized platform

2. You only need to upgrade to the closest supported platform which in your case is CUCM ver 6.1.5. During migration PCD will only power off your existing 6.x servers in you choose to keep the existing servers network information. This way you have a better failover mechanism.

3. Migration via PCD is unattended & saves the administrator a lot of time.

Hi Suresh

Please find the answers inline in regards to your queries

1. Do we need to assign IP address to PCD ?

[Raees]    Yes, PCD installation is like any other UC Application installation procedure.

2. How can we get the PCD tool, I mean is it downloadable or it comes with CUCM ISO CD ?

[Raees]     PCD software CD is shipped along with CUCM ISO.

Hope that answers your queestions. Please feel free to revert incase you have any further concerns or queries.

After successfull migration can we remove the virtual machine on which PCD has been installed, is there impact on cluster of doing this ?

Will this (PCD) work for Unity Connection and Presence server migration as well ?

Yes, PCD can be used to migrate CUP but not Unity Connection. You can find more information in the PCD Admin guide

Hello Lopez

Prime Collaboration Deployment is not the same as Prime Collaboration Provisioning. Although it forms a part of Prime suite, this new application PCD is developed into to simplify the upgrade/migrate procedure to CUCM 10.x. This tool greatly reduces the time & effort involved in migrating legacy CUCM servers to CUCM 10.x running on virtualized platform. I would recommend you to go through the concept video for better understanding.

Feel free to reach out to me incase of any queries.

Hi Raees,

Thanks for the video it looks very amazing tool, one of my client is going to upgrade from CUCM 6.1.2 (MCS) cluster to 10.x (B-Series) cluster

I just want to clarify couple of things -

- Do i need to upgrade from 6.1.2 to 6.1.5

- As part of the new license order client has "PC-10X-Standard-K9 - Cisco Prime Collaboration Standard 10.x" is this license sufficient for migrating from 6.x to 10.x. or any other license is required.

Thanks,

Kazim

Hi Kazim

Yes, you would need to upgrade the customer CUCM system from CUCM ver 6,.1.2 to CUCM ver 6.1.5 before starting the migration using PCD to CUCM ver 10.x.

As far as the license is concerned, the PCD software is shipped along with the CUCM 10.x bootable image & does not require any license for performing tasks like migration etc.

Hi

You should be able to find the OVA in www.cisco.com downloads section using the following path

Downloads Home > Products > Unified Communications > Call Control > Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager) > Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 10.0 > Unified Communications Manager Virtual Machine Templates-10.0(1)

Hi Mir,

hope you are doing well, please find the answers as below:

1. Since your PBX is having Pub and Sub, you can easily proceed with the installation, please find the steps as below and one of the main advantage of using PCD for this kind of setup is less down time( less than 5 min, for the firmware upgrade of phones).

a. Install PCD on BE 6000 H.

b. Configure Prime Collaboration Deployment to Migrate Cisco Unified Communications Manager Cluster to Current Release

c. Add ESXi Host Server

d. Discover Existing Cluster

e. Define Migration Cluster

f. Add a Migration Task,

g. Migrate CUCM to latest release.

for detailed info, please refer below url:

Hello...we currently went though a PCD migration to a new cluster (upgraded hardware, changed IPs and hostnames) to perform initial testing prior to a full migration of our production system. I am wondering if there is a way to simply "refresh" the data in the new CUCM environment rather than having to blow everything away and do it again for the actual conversion.

Thanks

Hi Clark

Im not sure if I understand the question correctly. If you are talking about the Vm's you created to test the migration, there is no way to refresh the data & you will have to delete them as per your requirement.

Hi Guys We have following applications running on MCS servers.

1. CUCM 8.5.1 Pub and Sub

2. CUC and UCCX 8.5.1 respectively.

We have ordered two BE6K servers to migrate above applications to release 10. I am planning to use PCD for this and have few questions

1. We are not running CUPS and no plans to run IM&P. Does that mean that i dont need to create an IM&P ova for this migration?

2. PCD doesnt support CUC and UCCX migration at the moment. what is the best approach to have them migrated across to BE6Ks with minimum down time?

3. For licensing, can I install PLM 10 on BE6K in advance of migration? having other VMs running on BE6K shouldn't affect the migration?

4. We do have Vmware foundation licensing ordered with BE6K servers. so I hope PCD works fine there?

5. I can see PCD 10.5 is available. Can I use it to migrate from 8.5.1 to 10.5 directly? Release notes says below

For a migration from Release 10.0(1) to Release 10.5(1) to be successful, you must upgrade all source cluster Cisco Unified Communications Manager nodes to 10.0(1)SU1, at a minimum, before using Cisco Prime Collaboration Release 10.5(1) to perform a migration.

does that mean that pcd 10.5 is only for migrations from 10 to 10.5?

6. I believe PCD doesnt use DRS at any point so 8.5.1 to 10 shouldnt be affected by CSCtn50405?

Please find the answers inline

1. CUCM 8.5.1 Pub and Sub

2. CUC and UCCX 8.5.1 respectively.

1. We are not running CUPS and no plans to run IM&P. Does that mean that i
dont need to create an IM&P ova for this migration?

[Raees] If you dont use IM & P, there is no need to create an instance of the same.

2. PCD doesnt support CUC and UCCX migration at the moment. what is the best
approach to have them migrated across to BE6Ks with minimum down time?

[Raees] Since PCD does not support the migration task for UCCX & Unity Connection, you will have to use the manual method to migrate these two application.

3. For licensing, can I install PLM 10 on BE6K in advance of migration?
having other VMs running on BE6K shouldn't affect the migration?

[Raees] Yes, you can install a stand alone PLM & install the licenses or after the migration you can use the PLM from one of the applications to manage the licenses. Once you upgrade to UC ver 10, you get a grace period of 60 days to upload the licenses.

4. We do have Vmware foundation licensing ordered with BE6K servers. so I hope PCD works fine there?

[Raees] Im not sure I got your question right, nevertheless, PCD has nothing to do with UC or Vmware licensing as long as you are able to create a Vm using OVA for PCD & install PCD.

5. I can see PCD 10.5 is available. Can I use it to migrate from 8.5.1 to
10.5 directly? Release notes says below

"For a migration from Release 10.0(1) to Release 10.5(1) to be successful, you

10.0(1)SU1, at a minimum, before using Cisco Prime Collaboration Release
10.5(1) to perform a migration."

does that mean that pcd 10.5 is only for migrations from 10 to 10.5?

[Raees] No. You can use PCD 10.5 to migrate from CUCM 8.5 to CUCM ver 10.5

6. I believe PCD doesnt use DRS at any point so 8.5.1 to 10 shouldnt be
affected by CSCtn50405?

[Raees] Yes. PCD does not use DRS to perform migrate operation.
