Hi,

CatOS which is already EoL, there are many companies out there which are still using CatOS. Problem arises when SUP 720 or SUP 32 running CatOS fails and new RMA SUP comeswith IOS on it. if you have the luxary of the spare switch to do the IOS to CatOS conversion, it is cool. What if there is no spare switch to do the conversion. The only option left is the Production Switch.

Here is the step by step, how to do it on the production switch:

1) copy the CatOS on the external flash disk of the RMA SUP.

2) Install the RMA SUP with Console cable connected into the chassis which already have Primary SUP running on CatOS.

3) As soon as it starts to boot, use CTRL+Break to getinto ROMMON. Dont let the RMA SUP to boot with IOS(Switch will crash in next 5 mins).

4) form ROMMON use the boot command to boot it from CatOS stored in the external flash.

5) Here u go....RMA SUP is up with CatOS and will go into standy mode.

Plz refer the attached document for more details.

Plz feel free to let me know if you have any questions about it.

Happy Converting in prodcution....

Cheers,

Tripat Singh

Hi Tripat,

If this document had the steps to bring up the MSFC aswell it would be good. And also its recommended to following the following document while doing the conversion from IOS to catOS:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a00801350b8.shtml

Lastly, I would also want you to watch out for the following error message while you are conversion IOS to catOS on a new supervisor module:

Console> (enable) dir bootflash:
error = -24
Open device bootflash failed (bad device info block)
Console> (enable)

When the supervisor is RMAd / replaced, it goes with Compact flash memory card by default. But the CatOS (version below 8.7.1) does not support this Compact flash adapter for the SP, but requires a 64MB bootflash DIMM for the SP.

So, you shouldnt be surprised if you are not seeing the bootflash from the SP when you have a version lower than 8.7.1 running on the SP, with a new/replaced supevisor.

The following link should help you understand better:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/catos/8.x/configuration/guide/supcfg.html#wp1042503

Hope this would be helpful.

Hi Anand,

I believe 2948 is a catOS box only, it cant be converted to IOS. Only CatOS box that can be converted is 6500 Series i believe.

HTH,

Tripat
