This is probably a stupid question, but when an AP is in repeater mode, can it still provide connectivity to clients?

I have this problem too.

Yes this is possible. We use the APs in repeater mode to extend the range of the root access point. So, clients which are in the range of the repeater AP can connect to the repeater AP and get access to the wireless network. The disadvantage with this is that the thorughput will come down drastically.
