why do we say cisco switch 2950 or 3560 as a catalyst

I may be wrong, but I believe that CATALYST was the product family name used by a company called Kalpana. Cisco purchased Kalpana 12 years ago to get their ethernet switching technology (and quickly stopped making their 'cut-through' switches), but the product family name lives on.

Actually Catalyst was the technology used by Company named "Crescendo Communications Inc" which was purchased by Cisco in 1993 and now word "Catalyst" is registered Trade mark for Switching technology for Cisco
