internet backup

Hi,

We have 2 ISP and we've tried configuring backup between them.

we used :

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 gw_isp1

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 gw_isp2 10.

we tested it by shuting down the interface or unplugging the cable. It works fine.

The problem is that we have an ethernet port connected to isp1 and when internet goes down, the interface is still up.

How should we really configure the backup ?

The nice solution, if the ISPs are willing, is to run a dynamic routing protocol. They would advertise the default route to you, so if the routing peer is unreachable the route goes away.

I have done this with EIGRP, but it will depend on what the ISP is willing to do. An IGP like EIGRP or OSPF is easier, but BGP with a private AS could also be used.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

It seems our isp use static route.

Could you give another suggestion, please ?

We've found one document about rtr.

we tried to configure it on a cisco 2691.

IOS (tm) 2600 Software (C2691-IS-M), Version 12.2(15)T5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

we've executed the following command without problem :

rtr 1

type echo protocol ipIcmpEcho xxxxx

timeout 1000

threshold 2

frequency 3

rtr schedule 1 start-time now life forever

we couldn't entered

"track 123 rtr 1 reachability".

There only 2 options under track : interface and ip.

is it the ios version?
