ROMmon Upgrade Quetion on a 3745

Unanswered Question
Feb 5th, 2007

I have what is probably a basic question. I've got a 3745 (waiting for the SmartNet contract to be enabled so starting here) and I need to enable the 512MB memory option. I should start by saying that everything *seems* ok and might be fine but I wanted to verify some items I see during boot.

(I actually have 2 questions - they are farther down in this post.)

The 3745 requires an updated ROMmon version an has minimum version IOS requirements:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps282/prod_bulletin0900aecd8021b738.html

To upgrade the ROMmon I followed this simple procedure (tried both directly from TFTP and from CF Slot0):

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_mod/cis2600/sw_conf/piperrom.htm

This is subtle, but notice the lines in the output example from the above URL:

###################################

###################################

Upgrade ROMMON initialized

rommon 1 >

###################################

###################################

That did not happen for me during the upgrade procedure. It DOES seem to have updated properly, but instead of going into the ROMmon prompt after upgrade, It just booted normally and suggests it has (and will continue) to boot the ROMmon from an "upgrade location" as indicated by "sh rom-monitor" output:

###################################

###################################

ROUTER#sh rom-monitor

ReadOnly ROMMON version:

System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(8r)T2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

TAC Support: http://www.cisco.com/tac

Copyright (c) 2002 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Upgrade ROMMON version:

System Bootstrap, Version 12.3(6r) [cmong 6r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Copyright (c) 2004 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Currently running ROMMON from Upgrade region

ROMMON from Upgrade region is selected for next boot <--INDICATING IT WILL BOOT THE UPGRADED IMAGE NEXT TIME TOO

###################################

###################################

QUESTION 1: Can someone confirm that this is normal behavior for the router to boot with the messages below (see boot output that is attached to post.) This happens each time the router boots now. Am I to assume unless I were to upgrade the physical ROM chip on the MB that holds the readonly bootstrap image this boot sequence is going to happen?

QUESTION 2: What is the line "No Need of Download TDM FPGA as EADI"?

Thanks in advance,

Hutch

Failure to upgrade the ROMMON image to version 12.2(8r)T2 or a later image before upgrading the Cisco IOS image causes the router to operate improperly and enter into an unrecoverable state.

This ROMMON image upgrade is required only if you are upgrading Cisco IOS images to Cisco IOS Release 12.2(13)T or later releases. If you have received a Cisco 2691, Cisco 3631, Cisco 3725, or

Cisco 3745 router with a Cisco IOS Release 12.2(13)T or later image already installed, you do not need to upgrade the ROMMON image.

(Sorry for the delayed reply.)

Well unfortunately the router already had 12.3(10e) IOS on it with 12.2(8r)T2 as rommon. The first thing *I* did was upgrade rommon before upgrading the IOS version to a version that I needed due to cisco security bulletins and the feature sets I required for the 3745. The router seems quite stable and I'm just trying to verify that the behavior (namely the messages during boot) is normal.

When I issue a "sh rom-monitor" I see the following output

#######################

ROUTER#sh rom-monitor

ReadOnly ROMMON version:

System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(8r)T2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

TAC Support: http://www.cisco.com/tac

Copyright (c) 2002 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Upgrade ROMMON version:

System Bootstrap, Version 12.3(6r) [cmong 6r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Copyright (c) 2004 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Currently running ROMMON from Upgrade region

ROMMON from Upgrade region is selected for next boot

#################

I'm assuming this means that the upgraded image resides in some sort of non-volatile ram, not a true ROM chip and that during next boot it will grab the upgraded image (and will continue to do so unless I tell it otherwise.) The old rommon image will remain there, but just not used.

Does this make sense? Is this normal behavior?

Hi,

I just upgraded my 3745 ROMMON from 12.2(8r)T2 to 12.3(6r). I guess your assumption is correct.

Thanks for the reply. I figured it made sense, but it's nice to have confirmation as it was the first time I've worked with the 3700 series.

I actually have a pair of 3745's - one has the upgraded ROMMON from the factory, the other was upgraded and you can see it the boot messages.

Thanks again,

Hutch

No problem.

I saw your post last month, since I'll be doing the upgrade as well, your post got my attention. I wait for the day that I upgraded it before replying :)
