Solved: Flash Memory Math

My Catalyst 2950 switch is showing this when I do a dir flash:

7741440 bytes total (1754624 bytes free)

Where is my missing free bytes gone? When i add the list of files that are shown it adds up to 2988605 bytes. When i subtract this from the total available I come up with 4752835 bytes that should be free. Where is my missing free bytes (2998211)?

Entry # 8 is a directory. If you add the size of the files in this directory to the size of the bytes listed here you might get the correct number of bytes used.

dir flash:/html

Yes, you can delete the folder. iirc the rmdir or delete statement will do this for you. Consult "?" in the root-mode of the switch for details on how to delete files/folders.

Can this directory be deleted? I only connect to my switch through telnet or SSH.

You'll loose http:// access to the switch if you delete these files. Backup the files to tftp before you delete them if you ever need them again. You can also download these files from CCO if you loose them (you need download permissions though).

Excellent! Thanks for the info Erik. I am looking to upgrade IOS and I currently do not have room to leave the existing image file as a backup in case things go bad with the upgrade. By getting rid of this html directory I should be able to now have both images on the switch until I am sure the new one is stable.
