Hi all, if I have subnet say 172.16.4.7/27

what would the first network be ? would it start 172.16.4.0 to 172.16.4.31

or would I start from 172.16.0.0 ?

Yes, for 172.16.4.0/27 network host address range would be 172.16.4.1 - 172.16.4.30 , 0 is network address and 31 is broadcast.

For 172.16.0.0/27 network host address range would be 172.16.0.1 - 172.16.0.31 , 0 is network address and 31 is broadcast.

Hi thanks for that, So does that mean for example 172.16.0.0/27 would include all the eay from 172.16.0.0 to 172.16.255.224 ? and if it was 172.16.4.0/27 would this go from 172.16.4.0 to 172.16.255.224 ?

Subnetting of 172.16.0.0/16 into many equally subnetted /27 blocks would include all the way from 172.16.0.0/27 to 172.16.255.224/27,

and subnetting of 172.16.4.0/24 into many equally subnetted /27 blocks would go from 172.16.4.0/27 to 172.16.4.224/27

It depends on what the "parent subnet" is.

If you subnet a 172.16.0.0/16 network into many /27 blocks, the first subnet will be 172.16.0.0/27.

If you subnet a 172.16.0.0/23 network into many /27 blocks, the first subnet will be 172.16.3.0/27.

If you subnet a 172.16.4.0/24 subnet into many /27 blocks, the first subnet will be 172.16.4.0/27

If you subnet a 172.16.4.0/26 subnet into two /27 blocks, the first subnet will be 172.16.4.0/27

Can anyone give me an example of what subnets we would have with say 10.1.1.5/27, would my first network be 10.0.0.0, second 10.0.0.32 etc ? right the way to 10.255.255.224 ?
