openssl generation of webadmin certs for 440x controllers

I would like to gen unique webadmin certs for my 4402 controllers using openssl.

I typically gen my apache certs with the following command:

openssl req -new -newkey rsa:1024 -days 365 -nodes -x509 -keyout www.example.com.pem -out www.example.com.pem

The controller rejects the gen'd cert without much info. Is there a trick to making self-signed certs for the controllers?
