any open source application that does almost the same as the RME? particularly the configuration management where running config and startup config are being compared..

There is a tool on sourceforge that is able to compare configs. I think it relies on Perl scripting.
It requires a fair bit of configuration and I disregarded it due to it being a single purpose app, whereas RME does so much more than config backups / comparisons.

You may want to look into Pancho (http://www.pancho.org/) and Rancid (http://www.shrubbery.net/rancid/). Pancho is in a bit of flux right now, but Rancid is still actively maintained.

thanks a lot.
i am already using RME for cicso routers, but there are 100 plus switches (allied telesyn) that are not cisco. i just hope they are supported..
