Hello,
I am trying to create a vlan on a 6509.
cc_6509_02(vlan)#vlan 1082 name ABC
It doesn't seem to like a number over 1009. I know you can create vlans up to 4096. I tried to create it from the config t prompt using vlan 1082 name ABC and this seems to work. I don't get an error but when I run show vlans I don't see it. BTW: I am setup in transparent mode for VTP.

THere are a couple of possible reasons for this.
extended system ID must be enabled, and there's an old TAC case where mac-reduction must be enabled;

Thanks for the links... It sounds like I can't use a vlan over 1000 as a regular vlan. Is that a correct statement on my part? BTW: I am running IOS not CATOS

Layer 3 ports and some software features require internal VLANs. Internal VLANs are allocated from 1006 and up. You cannot use a VLAN that has been allocated for such use. To display the VLANs used internally, enter the show vlan internal usage command.
Switches running Catalyst product family software do not support configuration of VLANs 1006-1024. If you configure VLANs 1006-1024, ensure that the VLANs do not extend to any switches running Catalyst product family software.

I am running native IOS on my 6509 not CATOS. So bottom line... I guess I can use a vlan over 1000?

Mike,
That's the correct way to configure the extended range vlans on the 6500 switch. You cannot configure the extended range vlans using the vlan database, it can only be configured in the global configuration mode. Please do a " wr mem" or " copy running-config startup-config " and check if you see it under the " show vlan".

I see that vlan 1082 is already assigned to a routed port on the switch internally. Please follow the points below:
Each routed port on the switch creates an internal VLAN for its use. These internal VLANs
use extended-range VLAN numbers, and the internal VLAN ID cannot be used for an
extended-range VLAN. If you try to create an extended-range VLAN with a VLAN ID that is
already allocated as an internal VLAN, an error message is generated, and the command is rejected.
-Because internal VLAN IDs are in the lower part of the extended range, we recommend that
you create extended-range VLANs beginning from the highest number (4094) and moving to the
lowest (1006) to reduce the possibility of using an internal VLAN ID.
-Before configuring extended-range VLANs, enter the show vlan internal usage privileged EXEC command to see which VLANs have been allocated as internal VLANs.
-If necessary, you can shut down the routed port assigned to the internal VLAN, which
frees up the internal VLAN, and then create the extended-range VLAN and re-enable the port, which then uses another VLAN as its internal VLAN.
Extended-range VLAN configurations are not stored in the VLAN database, but because VTP mode is transparent, they are stored in the switch running configuration file, and you can save the configuration in the start-up configuration file by using the copy running-config startup-config privileged EXEC command.
You should be able to see the extended vlans when using " show run ".
