It's better to learn to calculate without any tools

Yup, but when you are working in a production network, it's better to have a calculator, not only its faster, it's good to double-check your subnetting before putting it in the live network .

Unless you are studying for exam or you are burning manhour in your lab, yes its better to calculate :)
