HWIC-1FE on 2811

Hello, according to this page:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5855/products_data_sheet0900aecd80581fe6.html

Our 2811 should be able to handle 2 additional HWIC-1FE cards. However after I purchased one and installed it, I am getting errors in our log saying:

%GT96K_FEWAN-1-UNKNOWN_WIC: NM slot 0, wic card has an unknown id 53A

I even upgraded to the very latest IOS and am still getting these errors.

Anyone know what I can do here?

Thank you

Actually is not strange that the card was not recognized with older IOS.

From the data sheet:

http://cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5853/products_data_sheet0900aecd80581fe6.html

We read:

Note: For the HWIC-1FE and HWIC-2FE the minimum level is Cisco IOS 12.4(11) XJ.

Remember that an IOS that has letters at the end, is newer than one without letter.

So for example 12.4(11)XJ is "newer" that 12.(4)12.

Yes you are right, it support up to two HWIC-1FE.

ERROR CAUSE: The software does not recognize the type of WIC that is plugged into the port module.

ACTION: Check the part number on the WIC to verify that it is supported in the CiscoIOS release that is operating on the router. Copy the error message exactly as it appears on the console or in the system log, contact your Cisco technical support representative, and provide the representative with the gathered information.

I'll answer my own question here:

I didn't receive any feedback from the community that directly helped me solve my issue. And I don't have any kind of support from Cisco for this device. So after searching everywhere without luck for a solution (message boards, lists, web etc etc), I used the brute-force method. I tried about 10 different versions of IOS until I found one that worked. I don't know why this older version worked, but it did.

Version 12.4(11)XJ

So if you have a 2811 and you need to get an HWIC-1FE card working, use that IOS.

show diag now shows it recognized:

WIC Slot 2:

1 Port FE HWIC

Hardware Revision : 2.0

Actually is not strange that the card was not recognized with older IOS.

This did the trick for us too! We are using two HWIC-1FE cards in a 2821.
