1. What are the most important signature categories in descending order.
2. I'd appreciate any recommendations on
what might be the best categories to enable (from a security perspective to protect the router & network-windows based.
My current IPS Sig-category config:
ios_ips basic
ios_ips advanced
adware/spyware
viruses/worms/trojans
If ips_advanced is enabled, is ips basic required or can it be retired? See atttcahments for ips config, & memory.

The Intrusion Prevention System configuration guide will help you

On router platforms, you can always use basic or advanced as a starting point based on the memory availability of your router.
If you have less than 128MB memory, start with basic.
If you have more than 256MB memory, start with advanced.
Note: Both advanced and basic category include high severity, high fidelity signatures carefully selected by Cisco team.
All other categories can be used to selectively config signatures. There is no specific preference order, since signature selection depends on the network and function you want to achieve using IOS IPS.
The best practise is to use either basic or advanced, not use them both. Because advanced category is designed to include all signatures included in basic. So the answer to your last question is basic is not required, and if it is configured in CLI, just remove the basic.
Hope this helps,
