firewall

Hi all, can anyone tell me how the general firewall is setup, do most people use them inline with the network, or are they mainly used for NAT and have say an external ip on there. Could I have one internally on my network, with say 1 network subnet on the inside and another different subnet on the outside without NAT, and would it route to this as directly connected network ?

You can use a identity nat i.e. nat 0 on 6.x or in 7.x you have to disable nat control. It would route directly connected networks.
