Hardware problem?

Hi,

I have a Cisco 871W that was hanging up daily, the only solution was to reboot the router.

After one of the hangs it didn't boot any more.

If I did a dir:flash in Rommon mode it gave me an error. I had to format the flash to be able to install a new IOS (C870 Software (I installed C870-ADVIPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.4(6)T).

At this point I suspected that my flash memory was corrupted or broken.

After I installed a new IOS, it stills hangs up and the syslog shows this messages :

2007-03-17 04:04:42 Local7.Error 192.168.20.1 309: 000371: .Mar 17 05:04:56.076 PCTime: %AAA-3-ACCT_LOW_MEM_UID_FAIL: AAA unable to create UID for incoming calls due to insufficient processor memory

------------------

Now I don't know if I have a hardware problem or I don't have enough memory (flash or dram?). The router has:

128K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.24576K bytes of processor board System flash (Intel Strataflash)

I appreciate your advice.

You need at least 128 meg of memory and 28 meg of flash to run 12.4T code , this is minimum and may not be enough if you are running many features on the box . Do a show version to see how much memory you have .

Glen makes a good point about the memory and flash requirements. The error messages that you posted look much more like memory problems that flash problems. My guess is that the code that you loaded was a significant step up from the code that was on the router before and that you do not have sufficient memory to run this version. It looks like your choices would be to upgrade memory or to go back to somewhat older code.

I checked the requirements for running c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-6.T6.bin and as Glen indicated it does require at least 128 MB of memory and 28 MB of flash. If you post the output of show version it will show what you have on that router.

Thanks for your answers.

I've checked the memory requirements and I don't have enough memory for that IOS version.

However, I still don't understand why the router was hanging before I changed the IOS and why the dir command was giving an error.

Just in case this is my sh ver output:

----------

Cisco 871W (MPC8272) processor (revision 0x100) with 118784K/12288K bytes of mem

ory.

Processor board ID FHK093710QF

MPC8272 CPU Rev: Part Number 0xC, Mask Number 0x10

5 FastEthernet interfaces

1 802.11 Radio

128K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.

24576K bytes of processor board System flash (Intel Strataflash)

Configuration register is 0x2102

-----------

Thanks in advance,

Mariana

Hello,

I got the same error message on 4 of our C7609 switches while running show tech command.

%AAA-3-ACCT_LOW_MEM_UID_FAIL: AAA unable to create UID for incoming calls due to insufficient processor memory

%SYS-2-MALLOCFAIL: Memory allocation of 65536 bytes failed from 0x41DFDAE4, alignment 0

The switch committed sup-engine switchover after executing "show catalyst6000 all" which caused service interruption.

The only common thing among those switches is that all are running the same IOS image 15.1(3)S1.

Note that we have 65536K bytes of Flash.

What could be the possible root cause behind this failure?

Regards

Mahmoud
