7206 cpu process history

Can someone tell me why I am seeing the 72 hour cpu history allways at 100% and the 60min and 1min are normal. the number of packets per secound are around 15KPPS.

This is a 7206 router with a NPE-300.

The NPE-300 specification say that it can handle up to 400KPPs.

Can I put more port adapters or is the router stress out?

Is there any documentation on how to calculate how many packetes per Sec the NPE is forwarding?

Richard,

That's an actual reflection of how busy the CPU was over the last 72 hours. All it tells you is the utilization is much lower over the last 60 mins than the 72 hours preceding that. Honestly, the utilization levels look alarmingly high. You may want to investigate whether this has been triggered by any malicious traffic or bad hardware. Instead, if it's the normal baseline for this device then you may want to look at upgrading this device.

NPE-300 can handle 300kpps when fast switching and can handle only 18-20kpps when it's process switching. That's consistent with your findings of 15kpps being handled by the NPE and it looks like most of the packets are being process switched.

In an normal environment, you shouldn't be seeing too many packets being process switched as fast/CEF, depending on what's enabled, should handle most of the traffic. Focus on the traffic to see if there's any malicious traffic, like virus/worms, that's causing this behavior.
