Hi,

I have a very basic question.

Can some one please tell me what is the difference between l2 vlan and l3 vlan

L2 vlan cannot do intervlan routing ,not foward l2 broadcast to other subnet what else is the differnce

Hi Raj,

Practically there is nothing like l3 vlans. Vlans are always l2 which breaks broadcast domain at layer 2.

Now when we create logical interface at layer 3 switches for those vlans, they are created at upper layer (ip layer) so in common terms everyone say it as layer 3 vlans. But they are just logical interfaces for those layer 2 vlans which make communication possible between vlans.

I there any document specifying the difference

beacuse if we create a vlan for eg ASA then it cannot route traffic between vlans.

I want to know the diffrence as in for theory purpose only
