What port counters on switch and phone are saying ? Checking cabling perhaps ?

The IP phones intentionally do not respond to EVERY PING, in order to protect them from DoS attacks. I have found it's been more like 1 in 5. Best thing to do is PING from a PC attached to the back side of the phone to test for physcial connectivity issues to the core; however, since you're on a different VLAN from the phone (should be), it will not test routing to the phone.

Correct, I had completely forgot that!
