Hi all, is it possible to say have my 3 2950's or 3550's in a stack ? and how does it work, do you have just 1 ip address for the 3 switches, or do you have 1 management ip that represents all 3 and each also has an individual ip ?

Yes, if you are using Cisco Gigastack modules to connect all the switches. You have to configure the gigastack as a switch cluster. You can give a virtual IP address to whole cluster and it will be managed by single IP. If you want you can also give an individual IP to each switch. Please see the link below for more info:

HTH,Please rate if it does.

what is a gigastack module, do i need to have one of these to cluster them ? and if I did manage the switches via one ip, if I did for example show interfaces, how would they appear, would they have a chassis number then port number, ie switch member 1 port 1 etc, can you give me an example ?

Carl, Please see the link below for information and gigastack configuration.

Using the show interface will not reveal you about the interface and the chassis number. On the cluster master switch, if you do " show cluster member" it will list you all the information. Please go through the link that I pasted above.

so will 1 ip represent all the switches ?, and do you have to put a management ip on each switch or just 1 for the management stack switch
