Hi all, when a pc uses arp to get a mac address so the packet can be switched across the network to reach the destination, how does this work pc pc's in the wan, does it only use layer 3 ?

Hello,
What happens is that the PC will know that the destination is not on the same subnet so it won't arp. It will send it to the default gateway. The default gateway will check it's routing table and it does route recursion to the next hop. This proccess also goes on the next hop until the final destination is reached.
Hope this answers your question,

It only uses layer 3 because ARP is part of the TCP/IP suite of protocols (which begins at layer 3 with IP)
Ethernet only operates as high as layer 2 (i.e., MAC address).
Good Luck
