LAN ring routing advice needed

Hello Everyone,

I have a diagram and bunch of questions....

Thanks in advance for your advice!

About the diagram:

- Buildings 1-5 are 3560-E series and each

pair will be located in the same network closet.

- Building 6 is a 3560-S series

- All links are 1 Gigabit, except to the Firewalls

and Internet

Questions:

- Would you use single-area OSPF, multi-area

OSPF, or EIGRP?

- Would you make each building it's own subnet?

- Any other thoughts or suggestions on best use

of the 3560-E features for fault tolerance and

redundancy?

Hello,

1. As the network is not so large, You can use either Single-OSPF area or EIGRP configuration in the given setup.OSPF is generally considered witha large number of routers and a big hierarchical network design.Personally I would have used EIGRP.

2. Depending on your final network setup you have to design the final config. If you are running multiple vlans on each building and they are not spanning across other building, always make each building it's own subnet. Run L3 links from your each building to the core switch and use EIGRP for load-balancing and fault taulrent. You will not be able to use EIGRP on 3560-S, as this is with basic L3 image, you have to use static routes or default routes on these switch to communicate with other subnets.Another way is to use Rip and redistribute it to the nearest 3560 running EIGRP.

3. Use 3560 for running HSRP and create the L3 interfaces from each building to the core. Run EIGRP for multipath load-balancing and fault-tolerant.

I am leaning towards EIGRP right now,

and for building 6 I will probably just

use a static route to the ring.

More info:

- Each building will not have more than 80 clients in it.

- The network will grow to add maybe 4-5 more nodes around the main ring.

- One or two VLANS may span the entire network.
