4506 Supervisor II Plus with IP Base enough for core switch?

Would a Catalyst 4506 chassis with Supervisor II Plus with IP Base be enough for core switch for this network or should I choose the Supervisor V or upgrade to a 6504-E?

The network will consist of two core switches, each with redundant paths to 10 distribution switches, each connecting to several edge switches, some of which would in turn connect to outer edge switches. Traffic would consist of a mix of low bandwidth data from elevator controllers, electricity meters, and intercoms; intermittent VOIP from 100+ callboxes, and high definition video from 100+ security cameras. Five video recording servers may be cross linked to the two core switches.

What kind of routing will this be doing or are strictly using it as a layer 2 switch ? You might be better off getting a better supervisor like a sup 5 . The only big bandwidth devices would be high def cameras .

Under what circumstances would we REQUIRE a Supervisor V? What does "strictly using it as a layer 2 switch" mean? It is going to be the core switch for the network described, if that helps. Clients will be connecting to various switches to view video from the servers using a software client.

You need Sup5 if you want to run advanced routing protocols like EIGRP,OSPF,BGP etc. SUP2+ on Cta4506 will suffice your need in this requirement if you dont want to run the advanced routing protcols. Sup5 and Sup2+ gives the same performance on a Cat4506 Chassis.

By "strictly using it as a layer 2 switch" Glen meant that you dont want to run advanced routing features on this switch. I dont think so that you will run some advanced routing protocol as you have a fairly small topology and you will use the core switch just to do inter-vlan routing.Cat4506 with Sup2+ IP base image will suffice your need in that case.

HTH,Please rate if it does.
