When "meeting place" is needed for conferencing...

I wanted to find out if meeting place is needed in order to set up conference lines on phone extensions? Or can Cisco Call Manager handle it on its own?

My previous company had phones set up where we would just dial into an extension, leave the call open and then just press mute. Then anyone up to 10 people would be able to dial that extension or even call in from the outside using the full phone number of that extension, to host a conference call between people. This is what I want to set up but I dont know if I'll need meeting place or not. I know meeting place is to host 800 number con-calls, but is it needed to host extension con-calls?

Hi Bernie,

You don't need Meeting Place to setup this type of conference. You need to setup Meet-Me conferencing on Callmanager. Have a look;

Using the Meet-Me and Ad Hoc Conferencing Features

From this good doc;

Hope this helps!

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your help. I didn't know what the conference kind was called. This helps tremendously.

A quick question though, does Cisco Call Manager 5.1 have the "Meet-Me and Ad-Hoc Conferencing" feature? Because this is the version that I am purchasing. I was told v6.0 has it, but that it's not currently shipping yet. This is why I am getting 5.1. But that 6.0 definitely has it. So hopefully 5.1 has it so that I don't have to buy 6.0 or downgrade to 4.2.

To add to Rob notes, conference has been supported for a long time with callmanager. CM 5.1 also supports it.

The default conference bridge (Software Conference Bridge) which is available with CM only supports G711 codec. So if you have phones which would be using G729 you would either need Hardware Conference Bridge or a Transcoder.

Check the following link for more information about Conference Bridges.
