Hi guys

I am trying to configure "Email Notification" settings for various Alarm Category?s but not having much luck. (WCS Base Version 4.0.97.0)

What seems to be missing is any test facility, error messages (that i can find), Authenticaion options etc.

I have configured what i beleive are correct settings but am very light on any emails :-) i.e none.

I am using a FQDN for the SMTP Server and DNS is all correct.

What would be good is a "test email" button to test your SMTP settings. SMTP authentication settings and some error reports.

If i am talking rubbish or have missed something obvious then please point me in the right direction.

Many thanks in advance guys

Mark

Hi Mark,

The fact that you have not received any emails is good as emails are only sent for Critical Alarms. Have a look;

Alarm Email Notification

WCS includes a built-in email notification function that can notify network operators when critical alarms occur. Refer to the WCS Monitor > All Alarms > Email Notification page to view the current alarm notification settings.

From this doc;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6305/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008059c9f5.html#wp1073486

Monitor All Alarms > Email Notification

Use Monitor/Alarms, then from Select a command drop-down list select Email Notification, then click GO to access this page.

This page allows you to view the alarm categories with Critical Alarm email notification enabled and disabled, the current From and To email addresses, and the current SMTP server. This page also allows you to enable and disable email notification for any or all of the Alarm Categories, and allows you to access an Alarm Category email notification setup page.

For every category except Coverage Holes, the alarm severity must be critical to trigger the email. Email notification is available only for Alarms, not for events.

Email Notification Overview

Parameter Description

Enabled Check box; Checked = Email Notification ON, Unchecked = OFF.

Alarm Category The category of Critical alarms that generate an email notification. Click any of the entries in this column to go to the Monitor Email Notification for `' page.

From Any valid Transmitting email address.

To Any valid Receiving email address.

SMTP Server The name or IP address of the SMTP server that transmits the email notifications.

From this doc;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6305/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00805c546a.html#wp1041196

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: Non-critical alarms do not generate email notifications.

A WCS administrator currently has no control over which events generate alarms, when they time out, or what severity they are. On the controller, individual types of events can be enabled or disabled (such as management, SNMP, trap controls, etc.).

You are correct that it would be great to have a "Test" email function :( You should be able to disconnect an AP or one of the ports on a WLC to generate an email.

Hope this helps!

Hi Rob,

many thanks for your speedy reply. i understand that i will only receive email on certain levels of alarms, i should of explained myself better, sorry.

I have two WLS?s of which i have been failing over, i have also been dissconecting AP?s and failing the authentication process. But still no emails.

I have now contacted our Windows team to make sure that all services that are required on the Win2003 box are running.

Do you know if the failure in sending email is reported in any log anywhere?

Also so you know if any email address or online list at Cisco, that is a WBN (would be nice) feature list, for the WLC or wireless devices so that functionality or features may be suggested to the development team.

Once again many thanks for taking time to reply to my question,

Regards

Mark
