I'm looking for help (router config examples) for the most basic multicasting scenario. Might have source and all destinations on the same LAN, or at most spread across 3 Vlans on the same pair of 6509s running HSRP on all involved LANs. Thanks

yes you do need that... as its all about to join and leave mechanisam... and PIM sparsh and dense both are protocol indipenent and use the IGMP for discovery of Multicast tree...

Hi Friend,
You can enable some commands like
Cat6K(config)#ip multicast-routing
Cat6K(config)#int vlan x
Cat6K(config-if)#ip pim dense-mode
Cat6K(config-if)#ip igmp version <1/2/3>
This is very basic commands which will let things work on your cat6k.
