We are thinking of buying a 6509 w/ mods to "upgrade" our network. As part of the research, we need if our CSS will peer with a CSM.
Is it possible to have a CSM peer with a CSS in a Master/Backup scenario?

not possible.
They use different software and different protocols.

So, we cannot have the CSS be a peer to the CSM?
How do we ensure that the CSM is redundant similar to two CSSes?

With CSMs you have two options
1. If you are using a single 6500 chassis then you can install 2 csm modules in a single chassis
2. If you have a redundant setup (2 65k chassis) then you can install one csm in each chassis and make it redundant
