HSRP Architecture

Hai,

I have two CISCO 2800 series routers for HSRP configuration. I have two switches for connecting the two routers for HSRP configuration. Can any of the CISCO experts show me with a pictorial representation of the network architecture for connecting the 2 routers and switches for effective HSRP implementation? Is it really necessary to configure standby track on the interface connected with the ISP?

You can configure trunk between the 2 switches. HSRP hello packets will flow from router 1 to switch1 to switch 2 and router 2 and vice versa.

Yes it is always good to configure tracking command on interface connected to ISP so that incase your first ISP link goes down HSRP can track the same and reduce its priority on active router and will make standby router as primary. Also when you configure tracking command it is good to configure PREEMPT command so that once the primary router comes back up relelection can happen and it can again take the role of primary.

Hai Ankur,

With reference to the standby track command on the interface to the ISP, is it necessary to do the same with the interface to the LAN? As I have read other documentations showing standby track configured only on the standy router interface to ISP. Do I have to configure standby track on all the routers participating in the HSRP? Is it okay to set the standby track without the priority value?

Hi Sam,

You basically configure HSRP on your LAN and tracking is done to tell your HSRP configured interface to reduce the priority of active router. So you can configure tracking for any interface which you want to be tracked and make HSRP configured interface redunce its priority. In your case you will track your ISP interface so that once ISP link goes down your HSRP configured LAN interface will reduce the priority of active router.

You can configure track command on all the routers in your case router 1 and router 2 if you are configuring your 2 routers for load balancing or for MHSRP. If you are using router 1 as primary and router 2 is only working as standby router then you can sinmply track your ISP interface on router 1 only and configure preempt on both the routers so that once primary router is up it can again restart election and can become active.

If you do not provide any priority value in track command it will redunce the priority by 10 default value.

Hi Sam,

You need to track only the interface connected to your ISP, in order to swap the roles of the active and standby routes when the interface to the ISP of the active router fails, in order to insure that the traffic is routed perfectly.
