Last week a customer asked if they could install an authentic digital certificate from a 3rd party, like Verisign. I honestly didn't know the answer - I've never done it before. I suppose it's possible but wanted to run it by the guru's here.

Yes, you can install an authentic certificate from 3rd party and install that on CM.
