Content Switching Module (CSM) VLANs

Unanswered Question

Hi Sir,

Referring to the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Content Switching Module (CSM) (part number: WS-X6066-SLB-APC), it supports a maximum of 512 VLANs.

From most of the config examples I came across, when the CSM is configured for secure (router) mode, there's only one client-side VLAN and one server-side VLAN. How are multiple VLANs being used?

Please advise.

Thank you.

You can have multiple client & server vlans. If you have multiple client vlans CSM does remember the MAC address where that flow came in first and sends the return traffic back there.

Only issue with this design is server initiated connections. You can make server initiated conns work by introducing following rules

vserver server-OUT

virtual any

vlan 100 <-- server vlan where traffic initiated servers are

serverfarm ROUTE

no nat server

real 10.x.x.x

where 10.x.x.x is the gateway that you want to use to go out

Hi Syed,

Thanks for your reply.

My CSM currently has the following two subnets in secure (router) mode:

module ContentSwitchingModule 5

vlan 210 client

ip address ...

gateway ...

vlan 57 server

ip address ...

alias ...

When you say we can have multiple client & server VLANs, do you mean I can configure multiple "vlan XXX client" and "vlan XXX server" commands?

Please advise.

Thank you.

yes, you can have multiple 'vlan xxx client' and 'vlan xxx server' commands.
