L2VPN / Ethernet over the internet

Has anyone running ethernet/l2vpn over MPLS which can take an alternate path via a GRE tunnel over the internet? I have tried that and there seems to be the inherent problem that the internet MTU is 1500 only.

Maybe I can further clarify my question: Is there a possibility to encapsulate ethernet frames into IP and send them over the internet? Has any one this running? Can I get some more information on this?

The MTU is the problem, and has to be worked around. (E.g. reducing MTU). But otherwise, if the ISPs security systems are not blocking GRE (protocol 47), it should run ok.
