Emails are not sent to SMTP relay when Syslog generates automated action

We have LMS 2.6 on win2003 and it is working well. We are able to get emails sent from DFM when an alert occurs and through the notify button. We now want to set it up so that syslog sends an email for certain errors. Syslog is working bit the smtp.log shows that it cannot connect to the SMTP server.

Has anyone seen this before?

Why does DFM work yet Syslog seem to be failing?

Is there anything that can be done to correct it?

It is a Lotus Notes server, will that make any odds?

DFM and RME use different underlying SMTP libraries, but this error looks to be pretty low-level. Are you using the same SMTP server in both Common Services and DFM? A sniffer trace of the RME-to-SMTP traffic may prove useful in isolating the problem.
