Can a 3550 that is a SMI labeled device in a "show version" command run the ip services images without any problem or vice versa , a emi device run ip base code ? Are the codes strictly for the particular platform ?

Hi Glen,
Are you asking 3550 running SMI can run EMI or are you asking 3550 running SMI can be upgraded to different platform images? May be I am interpretting your question in wrong way ?

No just whether a SMI labled box can run the IP Services image or even can a EMI box run the SMI IOS ? Just wonder if they are interchangable and what the differences are if any in the hardware platforms .

Hi Glen,
It is practical to upgrade smi to ip services but I do not think any one would have tried or will try to upgrade EMI to IP base image.
Yes SMI can be upgrade with ip service image using upgrade kit (license) and switch will porvide all ip services features. Many do upgrade without using upgrade kit but that may not give all ip service features.

Hi Glen,
Its basically the upgrade kt with part number CD-3550-EMI=
It's basically a CD which has the key license afaik. Not very sure of the detailed contents.

An SMI based hardware can run an EMI image with no issues. No license key is required. You must buy the upgrade kit to do this legally but there are no hardware restrictions.
