Solved: IOS upgrade

Hell Friends,

Help me in upgrading IOS on 1841. I can see .bin file in flash but when I type del that file I get error file not found.

The additional information is useful. It does show that there is a bit less than 8 MB available in flash. The part that I find most interesting is the file named "y" which appears to have been created today and has over 14 MB of space. Can you tell us what that file is?

To load the new image you will need to delete something to free up enough space so that the new image will fit. From my perspective the easy choice would be to delete the file named y. If you do not want to delete this one, then we need to identify enough of the other files in flash so that you can delete them and get enough space for the new image.

If you are getting a file not found error, the most likely cause is that something is not matching between what you type and what the 1841 is finding. What you should type should be pretty much like this:

delete flash:

perhaps you can try it again and capture and post exactly what you have typed and what error message you got. It would also be helpful if you post the output of show flash.

Remember the colon between flash and the file name. Remember to type the file name exactly (I like to cut and paste to eliminate the possibility of typo mistakes).

Thanks to all of you. I managed to delete the bin file but when I copy from TFTP new one I get error of not enough space.

Hi there,

You need to do "squeeze flash:" after deleting the file to reclaim the memory space occupied by a deleted file, then try copying the new file again.

I am glad that you were able to delete the bin file. If you are getting an error of not enough space then there must be other files in flash. If you would post the output of show flash it might help us to find an answer for you.

Some routers need to use the squeeze command after a file is deleted in flash to recover the space that the file had occupied. But the 1841 is not one of those routers. So the space from the bin file should already be available. The output of show flash should give us a better understanding of what is occupying space in flash.

Hi,

Sorry, the squeeze flash command applies only to the Class B flash file system. This command is unnecessary with Class C flash file systems, because unused file space is recovered automatically. Moreover, the squeeze flash command is not supported on Cisco 1800 series routers or Cisco 2801 routers.

As Rick has suggested please do post the output of the show flash, and also please check the size of the desired IOS.
