Features is the major difference. You also have the option of going to Modular IOS if you chose to. SXD and SXF are both pulled from the same train of IOS so you should be able to upgrade to SXF without any hitches. With that said you should test the code with your configuration before widely rolling it out. But as far as an upgrade path its perfectly acceptable and you wont lose anything upgrading to it.
