How can I see traffic path? Is traceroute all I can do?

From a given router, is traceroute the best way to let me see the path traffic is taking?

Imagine that from router, next path is PIX firewall and load balancers. To my understanding, traceroute can't show me whether PIX firewall, load balancers, etc are on the way.

Please clarify whether there are tools or tricks out there which could let me determine the flow of traffic on a given network. Thanks.

With a windows XP machine, you can also use a utility called Pathping. Just go to the command prompt and type pathping then the address. Not sure if this will solve your issue with tracing through a firewall, but give it a try.
