OSPF and HSRP on internal lan. Resulting route issue.

Our gateway router is running an HSRP instance, and also OSPF. Main IP is, say, x.x.x.2 and virtual interface is x.x.x.1 with plans to add another router at x.3.

The router ospf ID is a loopback address in another range altogether.

Neighboring routers see advertised routes pointing to the x.2 address instead of the virtual address. I would have expected them to go toward the virtual interface for proper failover.

Am I missing something?

Roger,

This is the expected behavoiur. When ever the HSRP enabled routers advertise the routes, they advertise them using the physical IP address of the router and not the HSRP standby IP of the routers.

Nothing to solve. I found out independently that this is the correct behavior.

HSRP is needed if there are hosts or other things in the lan that do not run a routing protocol, and must use a default route.

In a routed only network, hsrp is unneeded.
