OSPF study lab issue

Hi all,

I am studying OSPF currently and have set up a lab. However I cannot understand or get going one part of the setup.

Please see the attachments for the physical, ip addressing, and ospf areas configured.

The situation is:

When the network between R1 and R4 is configured as Area 0, everything is perfect.

When this link is changed to be Area 14, R4 receives all the other routes, but Area 4 (R4 loopback IP) is NOT advertised. Also the neighbor relationship is formed.

I suspected that I may need a virtual-link between R1 and R4 however this does not resolve the issue (unless I am configuring this wrong?). Currently I have this in my config.

It seems odd that R4 receives all other routes fine but no other routers receive Area 4 advertisements.

With the setup I have in the diagrams, the routers are directly connected with either ethernet or serial DTE/DCE cables.

Any clues or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you do need a virtual link between R1 and R4. But, you should virtual link using area 14 and not area 4 as you have done. Can you reconfigure and try.

Hi Cameron,

I do not have an application to open .vsd files but looking at R1 and R4's configuration, as per my first level diag. you need to look at virtual link configuration....

Hi Sundar

Thank you SOOOO much !!

That fixed it - an obvious (I guess) issue but good that I have learnt about virtual-areas now !

Thank you again !
