Dynamic VLAN

Hi Guys,

I'm currently designing a network for a serviced/managed office environment. About 30 clients with about 1-5users per client. I would like to build into my design a dynamic VLAN feature. Where the users can plug in anywhere on the lan and get assigned the same VLAN.

I will be using C3750s and a C2811.

I know about VMPS, openVMPS and FreeNac, but my god are the later 2 difficult to get going install and manage. VMPS i believe is legacy and not available on the switchs i#m installing. I would like the receptionist to take the users MAC address, put this into a database with their VLAN adn away we go.

If anyone has been in a similar scenario or have any ideas i would like to know. No matter how trivial.

Regards

Stephen

I have tried 802.1x authentication with VLAN assignment in a lab scenario quite a while back with the 2950 switches. You might want to look it up if it will suit your needs. Requires a RADIUS server tho.

Hello,

Spoofed MAC addresses will place users into inappropriate VLANs.

Might I suggest dynamic VLAN assignment based on RADIUS credentials? Brief googling on this setup has turned up several FreeRADIUS scenarios.

Good luck,

Curtis H.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I will investigate the RADIUS server answer tomorrow. I think this maybe the easist way to do this.

I also like the idea of users authenticating on the network.

If anyone has any other tips for me on this, please let me know.

Regards

Stephen
