IP Version 6 and IP V4 compatiability

We have the following equipment on our network.

1. Firewall PIX 515e configuration version 6.3(1).

2. Router C3759 Version (12.1)

3. Router C3700 12.2(15)

Can you tell me what happens when an IPv6 packet is send to an IPv4 system?

Do we have to enable anything on our IPv4 system to allow the IPv6 packet to be accepted into the network?

Can you explain the process.

Hi,

yes you have to configure explicitly the feature, that is called NAT-PT:

http://cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps5187/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00801d6600.html

In practice you will need a minimum of 12.3 for this to work on the router.

Hope this helps, please rate post if it does!

What happens if it is not configured with NAT_IP, if b4 i get a chance to configure i receive packets from an IPv6 protocol? Do they just get dumped?

If you don't configure NAT-PT, IPv4 and V6 will be completely separated protocols and will not communicate.
