I have ROUTER RIP configured on our 4510 Switch running IOS 12.2(25)EW1 . I am getting ICMP notices several hops away that the TTL has expired. The TTL is 1. How is this possible? I mean ICMP notices from routers several hops away.

Where you are getting the message. Are you trying to ping 4510 switch or where on your network. Please let us know about your toplogy.

I am getting the ICMP msg as a a result of RIP Broadcast from a router that is several hops away. The ICMP msg indicates TTL exceeded. Since the RIP Broadcast has a TTL of 1, it should not travel past the 1st hop.
How then is it possible that I would get an ICMP message from a router several hops away??
