What would happen, if I had a port configured with:

switchport access vlan 191

but do not have the command:

switchport mode access?

Hi Friend,

By default all switches layer 2 ports are in dynamic desirable mode so if you do not manually configure it as "switchport mode access" then it will try to from a trunk with remote port which generating DTP frames.

It is always recommended that if you do not want the port to form a trunk manually configure it as an access port.

Hello,

We also enter the command "switchport nonegotiate" on the interface, just to make sure it doesn't try to form a trunk port.

Jeff

switchport mode access - this puts the interface in access mode only, and it will still generate DTP's to let the other side know.

switchport nonegotiate - whether in trunking or access mode, causes the switch not to generate DTP's.
