I'am using router 3640

IOS : 12.0(5)1 release software (fc1)

ROM : 11.1(20)AA2

I want to apply vlan encapsulation on ether or fastether sub interface

I tried to find "encapsulation dot1q..." with "?" marker in the subinterface and it does'nt exist.

Is it possible to apply vlan on subinterface with a more recent IOS version on router 3600 ?

Use the Cisco Feature Navigator to find an IOS that supports dot1q for your router:

"IEEE 802.1Q VLAN Trunking"

And please be informed that the encapsulation command is only available under the subinterface not the main interface.

NOTE: Its not supported in IPBase feature set.

interface fastethernet 0/0

no ip address

interface fastethernet 0/0.1

encapsulation dot1Q 1

ip address

interface fastethernet 0/0.2

enacapsulation dot1Q 2

ip address

Hi there,

it sounds to me that most of recent routers

support this feature .and also i've checked

the Navigator.it does support.

Try to reload your router!

or if you've got another router try to replace

your IOS with another one.

Must have at leaST ip plus software to run vlans . Also that is a very old version that may not even support it . 12.0 is EOL now I believe.
