I did nt get a reply for the Ping command used on a router (destination was another PC on a different network connected over the serial interface), but when i used the extended ping using the LAN interface IP as the souce IP, the extended Ping command worked for the same destination adress? What could be the reason?

The normal ping command uses the outgoing interface of the router as the source address. Make sure the the destination router has a reverse route for outgoing interface of the source router. Thanks!

Hi,

Agree with Manoj, this is most probably due to the LAN IPs of this site has a return route, but the WAN IPs (which are used as the source of the echo request) doesn't have a return route, make sure that the PC has a correct default gateway and if this is not a leased point-to-point connection between the 2 sites (may be an MPLS VPN) make sure that the provider has routed your LAN and WAN IPs correctly.

HTH, please do rate all helpful replies,

Mohammed Mahmoud.
