9509 and 9216 switch questions

I have a couple of switches that I am not too familiar with that I will be managing.

First a pretty basic question so forgive me, but how do you save the running config to start?

Both switches have had changes made and have not been saved.

Also, when I first started here, I seem to remember a logical view of the connections for the VSANs, is that is device manager or is that in the fabric manager?

When I try to open fabric manager, I get the message:

Could not connect to local FM server

Should it be started?

If yes, please wait for the server to start.

What will happen if I select "yes"

If you are not familar with the switches, I suggest you go to:

and download the PDF and have a very good read of it. It will help you a lot.

Also, make sure you save the configs to an external host. You can automatically save the configs to your FM host is it supports it.

Fabric Manager shows the pretty pictures of your setup. When you make changes to FM or Device Manager and you try to exit, it will ask you to save your changes to the startup config.

It is relatively rare that the FM server is not actually running. What type of OS are you running on the host that you are trying to connect to when running FM?

It can't hurt to select yes to start it.

Windows XP isthe host.

I will try to start the FM server.

Is the FM server actually on the machine that loads the Manager component?

I have had a number of issues with FM server. It can be a bit odd sometimes. I have removed (so far only on Solaris) the whole package and reinstalled it a couple of times due to some Java issues with the host and FM Server. That was due to me making changes in the fabric and FM not picking it up.

Every host that you attach to the switches will end up having FM residing on it. It is done automatically when you visit the switch URL and it downloads and installs the software.

You really need to get an FTP service running on your workstation so you can copy the configs off your switches and guard them with your life.
