Max distance supported 1510 backhaul bridge

Hi All,

What is the greatest distance supported using 5GHz backhaul bridging for the Cisco 1510 MESH AP's? What the max data rate with 2 hops over a 7 mile link?

Hi Tom,

You should have a look at the two "Ask the Expert" Q&A threads at the front of the Wireless Mobility forum here. Both Lily and Fred address these type of questions quite nicely. Here is a clip;

The recommended distances for the Mesh backhaul is typically between 1000 to 4000 Ft as this assumes you are connecting a Root Mesh AP referred to as a "RAP" or Rooftop Access Point to a "MAP" Mesh Access Point (that's usually an AP mounted on say a telephone or street light pole using an Omni antenna).

The backhaul link can certainly go further if you aim the signal in a given direction (using a directional antenna).

However, when doing same, it does limit the options of the AP to "mesh" to only those APs within the area covered by the directional antenna.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the reply! The problem I am experiencing is we have one source claiming the backhual 5Ghz radio will provide a suitable link with one hop over a seven mile link path. I can't find any documentation from Cisco to back up this claim. What I have found is the information you referenced along with the design guide off Cisco's web-site.

The only thing I can assume is the seven mile backhaul solution is not a supported design, especially when the Cisco experts recommend using the 1400 or 1300 bridges for long haul links.

Hi Tom,

Yes, I have to agree that the 1500 Series is not designed for this deployment model. I think the 1400 Series is definately the way to go.
