Managing large IOS files

We are looking for suggestions on tools that organizations use for managing large IOS files. Our issue stems from the fact that the TFTP protocol doesn't handle files larger than 32mb. We were using SolarWinds TFTP server. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Modern TFTP servers should support files > 32 MB if they are compliant with RFC1783. However, there are TCP protocols supported by IOS that due the job quite well (e.g. RCP, SCP, FTP). The most commonly supported by management apps is RCP since it's been around about as long as TFTP.

CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution supports TFTP, RCP, and SCP for image management.

Thank you for the info. For today I think I'll use the Windows FTP server but I'll look into the Cisco Works as well. We have it but haven't used it much yet.

TAC told be to use TFTP32 and that it would support transfers over 32mb. However, on another post elsewhere someone said they tried that and it still timed out after 32mb.

As was posted yjdabear, you need certain IOS versions as well to support > 32 MB transfers.

If your tool supports it or you're doing it manually, might as well use scp instead of tftp. Otherwise:

For CiscoWorks LMS, see:

For Solaris, Sun has this article on the subject:

For Windows, there're products such as TFTP Turbo.

For Cisco routers/switches:

Image upgrade using Remote Stage fails if the image size exceeds 32 MB.

In the Remote-Stage flow, the only protocol that is supported currently between Remote Stage device and target device, is TFTP.

Here, it uses the TFTP server of IOS on the RS device.

There is a limitation in the Cisco IOS TFTP server for transferring files exceeding 32MB from Remote Stage device to Target device.

Workaround:

Please upgrade the IOS image to any of the following versions which has the 32 MB fix:

?12.2(18)SXE

?12.003(009.008)

?12.0(29.03)S

?12.2(17d)SXB07

?12.2(18)SXD04 12.2(25.04)S

?12.3(09.08)T
