Issue connecting E1 to PBX

I am trying to route our international calls from London to NY over our IP network. Call flow from London will be: Nortel Meridian > PRI card > Cisco Gateway PRI Interface > TDM to RTP conversion > Into QoS enabled London LAN > Via MPLS Network > Into QoS enabled New York LAN > Avaya Interface > Internal Avaya RTP to TDM conversion & vice versa.

I am currently stuck with configuring link between Cisco 2811 E1 interface (VWIC2-1MFT-T1/E1) and Nortel Meridian Option 61 PBX DDP2 (NT5D97AD) card.

Here is part of router config

card type e1 0 0

network-clock-participate wic 0

network-clock-select 1 E1 0/0/0

!

isdn switch-type primary-qsig

!

voice-card 0

no dspfarm

!

controller E1 0/0/0

linecode ami

pri-group timeslots 1-31

!

interface Serial0/0/0:15

no ip address

isdn switch-type primary-qsig

isdn overlap-receiving

isdn incoming-voice voice

isdn send-alerting

no cdp enable

!

voice-port 0/0/0:15

!

Here is output of some troubleshooting command:

LONQ-A-2811#show controllers e1

Receiver has loss of signal.

hi sasa,

I'm not an expert yet, but I believe your E1 interface is down. make sure there's no problem with your local service provider

LONQ-A-2811#show controllers e1

E1 0/0/0 is down

Layer 1 Status:

DEACTIVATED

Hi Kyih.

Thanks for the post.

I have realised that my controller is down, but do not understand why. I have shecked and swapped cable with no luck.

We are connected to our PBX, no provider, and beleive that it is configured correctly, but if anybody can post an working example of PBX config it would be helpfull.

hello,

please check cabling to your PBX. Note that AMI linecode is not common for E1, generally HDB3 is used. But before worrying about that, you must resolve the "Receiver has loss of signal." error.

Hi p.bevilacqua ,

Hi,

It's a cable problem, not a configuration issue.

What cable are ? you using? The PBX, what type of connector it has ? If RJ45, you must NOT use ethernet cable, but a custom made one with the crimp tool and plugs.

Hi

It is RJ45 connection and I have tried ethernet and cross-over cables, so that is the cause of the problem. Do you know the pin setup for the custom cable? Can you point ne to a document please.

Thanks,

Sasa

As I suspected :)

The pinout for the router is:

http://cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps4062/prod_installation_guide09186a00801c9330.html#44346

The pinout for the PBX MAY or MAY NOT be the same. However, basically you have to cross TX with RX. The polarity of the TIP and RING within a TX and RX pair is not that important, but it would be very good if you can make the TX and RX to use a a twisted pair in the cable (color and matching color-striped indicate a pair)

You can ignore the shielding pins.

Let us know if it works and do not forget to rate useful post!

PS. If you never configured voip before it may take some patience to make it work. But at the end, it will. Ditto for making cables.

Hi,

This was quite helpfull, but did not resolve problem.

I have created the cable and connected. Now I have some lights on the card:

CD: green

LP: None

AL: Orange

Controller E1 is sill down but message has changed from "Receiver has loss of signal." to "Receiver has loss of frame."

LONQ-A-2811#show controllers E1

LONQ-A-2811#

I have tried changing framing (CRC or NO-CRC) and linecodding (ani and hdb3) but no luck.

Maybe my cabling is still wrong?

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Sasa

Neither me or PBX guy ever configured any VoIP, but hope to learn :)

Hi,

configure

controller e1 0/0/0

clock source internal

After that you should see controller up. Most likely is hdb3 / crc4,

I think you need to provide Clock source on the E1 configuration:

controller E1 0/0/0

clock source internal

and Emulate network for the Serial Interface

inter s0/0/0:15

isdn protocol-emulate network
