The problem began when I rebooted the machine that is the ip
helper-address machine. When it came back up none of the machines
could talk to it anymore. It was just that machine.
Rebooting the switch cleared the issue, but I would have preferred
figuring out the problem and correcting it without a reboot.
Do you have any thoughts as to what may have happened and any
suggestions about how to have resolved it without a reboot? Many thanks.

Strange situation. Here are some things to try/check if it ever happens again:
- Check the switchport to see if it is of course up, shows packets going in/out, reflects that it sees the mac address of the machine in question.
- Before rebooting the entire switch, try bouncing the switchport or simply disconnect and reconnect the cable.
- May be a good idea to verify the switchport speed and duplex settings are in line with the machine also. Either both set to auto or hard coded to the same settings but not a combination of both.
Tough to say exactly what happened here but this may help.

hi, this sounds like a posibility of duplicate ip address conflict in your LAN network.. perhaps by rebooting the ip-helper address machine another machine picked its IP.
does your ip-helper address machine has a reserved static IP in DHCP so that no other machine can grab it ?
