Hi,

I have a dought that why actually cisco uses 255 for reliability and load. Why not it is 100 instead of 255. Can anyone answer me with detailed description ?

Cisco Systems developed the IGRP to overcome the limitations of RIPv1. IGRP is a distance-vector routing protocol that considers a composite metric which, by default, uses bandwidth and delay as parameters instead of hop count. IGRP is not limited to the 15-hop limit of RIP. IGRP has a maximum hop limit of 100, by default, and can be configured to support a network diameter of 255.

rely - Reliability. Reliability of the interface as a fraction of 255 (255/255 is 100% reliability), calculated as an exponential average over five minutes (default).

load - Load Average. Load on the interface as a fraction of 255 (255/255 is completely saturated), calculated as an exponential average over five minutes (default).

So Cisco recommends not to Change any of the default K values because it may affect your network performance & traffic computations problems.

255= 11111111 = 8 Bits

The choice of 255 for representation of reliability and of load reflects looking at these values as binary values. Both reliability and load are calculated as 8 bit numbers. And 255 is the maximum value possible with 8 bits.
